In a significant move to bolster its global trade stature, Dubai Customs has launched the Center of Excellence for Customs and Trade Logistics in collaboration with the University of Dubai. This initiative is part of Dubai's comprehensive strategy to establish itself as a preeminent global trade and logistics hub. The center’s primary mission is to modernize customs systems and enhance supply chain resilience, aligning with the goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33.
Functioning as an innovative research and knowledge center, the newly founded facility will focus on developing cutting-edge customs solutions, optimizing operational efficiency, and boosting Dubai’s global competitiveness in trade. This project echoes the emirate’s long-term objective of becoming one of the world’s leading economic and commercial centers.
Dubai Customs indicated that the center will zero in on policy formulation, applied research, and the integration of digital customs systems, alongside international benchmarking efforts to enhance logistics performance and trade facilitation. Additionally, the initiative will foster the growth of smarter customs operations leveraging artificial intelligence and modern trade technologies.
Through its partnership with the University of Dubai, the center is poised to collaborate with top-tier academic and research entities globally. Notable partners include Kühne Logistics University, Michigan State University, University of Adelaide, and Henley Business School.
Officials expect the center to tackle emerging challenges in global trade, such as cross-border e-commerce, sustainability, and digital transformation of logistics operations. The initiative aims to enhance trade transparency and improve the customer experience within customs services.
Dr. Abdulla Busenad, Director General of Dubai Customs, characterized the center as a strategic investment in the future of Dubai, pivotal to the emirate’s economic growth strategy. He noted the initiative would enhance research capabilities, foster evidence-based policies, and ensure competitiveness in the face of evolving global trade dynamics.
University of Dubai President Dr. Eesa Al Bastaki highlighted the partnership's role in bridging academic insight with practical customs operations. He stated that the collaborative efforts aim to generate innovative solutions that could redefine global trade governance and integrated logistics systems.
Coinciding with the launch, Dubai Customs and the University of Dubai are hosting a major innovation hackathon featuring 33 student teams and over 110 participants. This event aims to develop smart solutions for customs inspections, supply chain resilience, trade transparency, and the future of logistics technologies.
This initiative underscores Dubai's commitment to digital transformation, innovation, and knowledge-centric economic development, as it aspires to be at the forefront of future global trade systems.
