French Influencer Amine Mojito Jailed for Fake Syringe Prank

French social media influencer Ilan M., popularly known as Amine Mojito, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison, with six months suspended, for a controversial syringe prank that shocked the public. In addition, Mojito has been fined Rs 1.56 lakh ($1,760) and banned from owning or carrying a weapon for three years. The punishment comes after widespread outrage over videos in which he pretended to inject strangers with an empty syringe, capturing their terrified reactions.

The videos were released in June 2025, just before the Fete de la Musique (World Music Day). In these clips, Mojito approached unsuspecting members of the public with a syringe and mimicked injections without actually using a needle. The prank quickly went viral, drawing criticism amid a period when France was on edge over reports of real needle attacks at student parties and music festivals. Authorities were concerned that such content could amplify public fear and encourage dangerous imitative behavior.

Legal Proceedings and Court Decision

During the trial, prosecutors argued that Mojito’s actions amounted to harassment and deliberate provocation. They emphasized that although the syringe was fake, the prank caused psychological distress and could have contributed to panic surrounding real attacks. One prosecutor described Mojito as a public menace due to the potential risks his videos posed.

Mojito defended himself by stating that the videos were intended purely for entertainment and to make people laugh. However, he admitted that he underestimated the potential consequences of his pranks and expressed regret. “I copied pranks I saw online in Spain and Portugal. I didn’t think it could hurt anyone. I made a mistake,” Mojito told the court.

Public Reaction to the Verdict

Social media users reacted strongly to the sentencing, with many calling it too lenient. Some criticized that a six-month jail term would not act as a strong deterrent for others who attempt similar pranks. Many highlighted the fear and anxiety the prank caused to innocent people, stressing that even a fake syringe can lead to panic and potential health concerns.

One social media user commented, “How is this acceptable? It’s like someone running at you with a fake gun. The victims had to wait for test results, fearing serious infection or disease.” Another user noted, “Six months only? He might serve even less and repeat such dangerous pranks. The punishment doesn’t seem sufficient.”

The case highlights the growing concern about the influence of social media pranks on public safety. Authorities in France have increasingly warned against viral challenges or videos that may encourage dangerous behavior. The incident also reflects the need for stricter oversight of content that can incite panic, especially during sensitive times or public events.
