Serious concerns have emerged from Hamidia Hospital in Bhopal after reports revealed that burn patients are being treated in extreme heat due to non-functional air conditioning systems in critical care areas. The situation has raised questions about patient safety and hospital infrastructure at one of Madhya Pradesh’s largest government medical facilities.
Patients admitted to the burn ward, including those suffering from severe injuries covering up to 90 percent of their bodies, are reportedly enduring unbearable temperatures. Family members have been forced to arrange coolers, ice blocks, and manual fans to provide some relief as the summer heat continues to intensify across the region.
The crisis extends beyond patient wards. Air-conditioning units in the Burn Intensive Care Unit and Operation Theatre have reportedly remained out of service for several months. As a result, medical procedures are being conducted in less-than-ideal conditions, creating concerns about infection control and recovery outcomes for critically injured patients.
Medical experts emphasize that temperature regulation is a crucial part of burn treatment. Patients with extensive skin damage are highly vulnerable to infections because their natural protective barrier has been compromised. Controlled environments with filtered air and stable temperatures are considered essential for reducing complications and improving survival rates.
Official records indicate that hospital authorities repeatedly informed concerned departments about the malfunctioning cooling systems. Communications dating back to 2025 reportedly highlighted the urgent need for repairs and installation of functional air-conditioning units. Despite multiple reminders and requests, the required work has not been completed.
According to hospital officials, administrative and technical delays involving multiple departments have slowed the restoration process. While funding for electrical work has reportedly been approved, coordination issues between implementing agencies have prevented the project from moving forward at the required pace.
The situation has sparked criticism from patients' families and healthcare observers who argue that essential medical infrastructure should never remain non-functional in a specialized burn treatment facility. Authorities are now facing increasing pressure to resolve the issue quickly and ensure a safe environment for patients receiving critical care.
