India has launched its first hub-and-spoke international aviation network, marking a major step toward improving air connectivity for passengers travelling from Tier-II and Tier-III cities. The first "Easy Connect" service operated by Air India began from Varanasi, allowing travelers to complete check-in, baggage handling and immigration procedures at their departure airport before connecting through Delhi to international destinations.
The government believes the new system will simplify international travel, reduce waiting times and strengthen India's position as a future global aviation hub.
How Does the Hub-and-Spoke Model Work?
Under the hub-and-spoke model, smaller airports act as "spokes" connected to major aviation hubs such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata. Passengers travelling internationally complete all travel formalities at their origin airport.
After arriving at the hub airport, travelers can directly proceed to their international departure gate without repeating check-in, baggage transfer or immigration procedures, making transit much faster and more convenient.
Varanasi Becomes India's First Spoke Airport
Air India's inaugural Easy Connect flight AI1111 departed from Varanasi with a full passenger load. The service has been scheduled to connect passengers through Delhi to multiple international destinations within a short transit period.
Passengers on the first flight were travelling to cities including Riyadh, Dubai, Jeddah, Phuket, Colombo and Kathmandu, while the service also provides connections to major destinations such as London, Frankfurt, Rome, Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Zurich and Manila.

More Cities Will Join the Network Soon
Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu announced that the network will expand rapidly over the coming weeks. Cities including Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, Patna and several others are expected to become new spoke airports. Air India also plans to add Ahmedabad, Kochi, Goa, Hyderabad, Chennai and Amritsar as the network grows.
The government also confirmed that IndiGo is expected to introduce similar operations through Mumbai Airport in the near future.
Government Aims to Make India a Global Aviation Hub
According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, nearly 35% of India's international passengers currently transit through foreign hubs such as Dubai, Singapore and London. The new model aims to retain more international transit traffic within India by routing passengers through domestic hub airports.
Officials say India's strategic location between Europe and East Asia gives it a significant advantage to become a major global transit center by 2047.
Passengers Will Experience Faster International Travel
Under the Easy Connect system, passengers receive boarding passes for both domestic and international flights at the starting airport. Checked baggage is automatically transferred to the final destination without requiring re-checking at the hub airport.
The simplified process is expected to reduce travel time, improve passenger convenience and enhance the overall airport experience while making better use of India's expanding aviation infrastructure.
Aviation Growth Expected to Boost India's Economy
The government considers the hub-and-spoke model a major part of India's long-term aviation strategy. Officials believe improved connectivity will boost tourism, international trade, investment and employment opportunities, especially in smaller cities.
According to official estimates, the aviation expansion strategy could generate nearly 16 million direct and indirect jobs while contributing approximately US$1.4 trillion to India's economy by 2047.
