A powerful 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's Central Sulawesi province on June 16, sending residents rushing into open areas and causing widespread panic. The quake was centered about 43 kilometers southeast of Palu at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, resulting in intense shaking that was felt across the region.
Casualties and Injuries Reported
Authorities confirmed that at least one person lost their life while 38 others were injured in the earthquake. Among the injured, several people suffered serious wounds and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Emergency teams were immediately deployed to assess the impact in affected districts.
Buildings and Infrastructure Damaged
The earthquake caused significant damage to homes, public facilities, places of worship, government buildings and business establishments. Officials reported that dozens of houses were damaged, while bridges and sections of major roads also suffered destruction, disrupting transportation and daily activities.
Hospitals Evacuate Patients
Several hospitals in Palu evacuated patients as a precaution against possible structural damage and continuing aftershocks. Patients, including those receiving medical treatment and IV support, were moved outdoors while health workers monitored the situation.
Aftershocks Raise Fears
Indonesia's meteorological agency recorded more than 70 aftershocks following the main quake. The continuing tremors revived painful memories of the devastating 2018 Palu earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 4,000 people. Many residents chose to remain outside their homes due to fears of further shaking.
No Tsunami Threat Detected
Although residents living near coastal areas initially feared a tsunami, authorities confirmed that there was no tsunami threat associated with the earthquake. However, officials urged the public to remain alert and follow emergency instructions as aftershocks could continue in the coming days.
Indonesia Remains Highly Vulnerable
Indonesia frequently experiences earthquakes because it lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most active seismic zones. The latest disaster once again highlights the country's vulnerability to powerful natural events and the need for continued disaster preparedness.
