Indonesia has introduced a new digital health innovation toolkit designed to help hospitals and healthcare providers develop technology solutions that deliver measurable improvements in patient care.
The framework, known as the Value-Based Digital Health Innovation Canvas (VDHIC), was created by Indonesian health leaders working with researchers from Monash University through the Australia Awards Fellowship programme.
The toolkit provides a structured approach for hospitals to design and implement digital health initiatives while focusing on five major goals: improving population health, enhancing patient experience, increasing provider satisfaction, reducing healthcare costs and promoting health equity.
According to project leaders, the system encourages hospitals to integrate digital solutions directly with Indonesia’s national health data platform, SATUSEHAT, which connects healthcare records across the country.
Digital health expert Juliana Sutanto, who leads the research collaboration at Monash University, said the toolkit shifts healthcare innovation away from a technology-first mindset and toward a value-based model that focuses on solving real health challenges.
Officials at the Indonesian Ministry of Health also said the framework will help guide future digital health policies and ensure that new technologies meet regulatory, clinical and governance standards.
A key focus of the initiative is improving healthcare access in eastern regions of Indonesia, where medical infrastructure and digital connectivity remain limited. The toolkit encourages innovators to assess digital literacy, technology readiness and infrastructure conditions before implementing new health technologies.
Experts say many digital health projects often fail to scale after successful pilot programs due to lack of coordination among stakeholders such as hospital administrators, doctors and regional health authorities. The new framework aims to address this issue by involving healthcare professionals early in the planning process.
Indonesia has increasingly partnered with international organisations to accelerate the digital transformation of its healthcare system. The country has recently launched collaborations with global technology firms and research institutions to expand digital health services and explore the use of artificial intelligence in medical systems.
The introduction of the VDHIC toolkit is expected to support Indonesia’s long-term goal of building a more connected and efficient healthcare system through technology-driven innovation.
