Five people were taken to hospital after a canister of bear spray was accidentally discharged inside a post office in the Japanese city of Nagoya. The incident caused several people inside the building to feel unwell as emergency responders rushed to the scene.
According to local officials, a foreign national accidentally activated the anti-bear spray while inside the post office. The individual reportedly apologized to authorities and said the discharge was unintentional. Emergency crews quickly evacuated the affected area and provided assistance to those exposed to the chemical spray.
Several People Felt Unwell
Fire department officials confirmed that eight people experienced discomfort following the incident. Of those affected, five were transported to nearby hospitals for medical evaluation and treatment. Authorities stated that none of the victims suffered serious injuries or life-threatening conditions.
Emergency responders ventilated the building and ensured that the chemical exposure did not pose any further danger to employees, customers, or nearby residents before allowing normal operations to resume.
Bear Spray Designed for Wildlife Protection
Bear spray is a powerful deterrent commonly used in areas where encounters with wild bears are possible. It contains concentrated irritants that can cause temporary breathing difficulties, eye irritation, coughing, and burning sensations when accidentally released in enclosed spaces.
Officials reminded the public that such products should be handled carefully and stored securely, especially when carried into crowded public places where accidental discharge could affect multiple people.

Japan Facing Rising Bear Encounters
The incident comes as Japan experiences a sharp increase in bear-related incidents across the country. Authorities have reported several fatal bear attacks in recent months, while wildlife has increasingly been entering residential neighborhoods and urban areas.
Experts believe the growing number of encounters is linked to expanding bear populations, environmental changes, and declining rural populations that have reduced human activity in forest regions.
Authorities Continue Public Safety Measures
Japanese authorities continue monitoring wildlife activity while educating the public about bear safety. Local governments have strengthened emergency response plans, increased warning systems, and encouraged residents in high-risk areas to remain alert during outdoor activities.
Officials stressed that the Nagoya incident was unrelated to an actual bear encounter but highlighted the importance of safely handling wildlife protection equipment.
