South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held another high-level summit meeting in South Korea as both countries continue efforts to strengthen ties despite historical tensions.
The meeting took place in Andong, a historic southeastern South Korean city known for its UNESCO-listed traditional folk village. The summit marked the fourth meeting between the two leaders in around six months, highlighting growing diplomatic engagement between Seoul and Tokyo.
The hometown-style summit follows an earlier meeting held in January in Nara, Japan, the hometown of Prime Minister Takaichi. Officials described the exchange of hometown visits as a symbolic effort to build deeper personal trust and stronger bilateral cooperation.
During the discussions, both leaders focused on economic cooperation, energy security, regional stability, and the ongoing geopolitical challenges linked to the Middle East conflict and Indo-Pacific tensions. The leaders also discussed strengthening strategic coordination between the two US allies.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said cooperation between the two countries has become increasingly important under difficult global conditions. South Korea’s presidential office also expressed hopes that the summit would further deepen mutual trust and political understanding.
Relations between South Korea and Japan have historically faced difficulties because of disputes related to Japan’s colonial rule over the Korean Peninsula before World War II. However, ties have improved significantly since 2023 as both nations shifted focus toward shared regional security and economic interests.
Analysts believe both governments are trying to avoid public conflict over sensitive historical issues while prioritizing cooperation on supply chains, economic security, North Korea’s military activities, and uncertainties linked to global politics.
Experts also noted that US President Donald Trump’s America-first foreign policy and instability caused by the Iran conflict have encouraged Seoul and Tokyo to strengthen their partnership further.
The summit is being viewed as another important step in maintaining stable diplomatic relations between the two neighboring Asian powers during a period of growing international uncertainty.
