Japanese police have arrested a South Korean national for allegedly disrupting an annual festival at Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo. The incident has once again highlighted the sensitive historical and political tensions surrounding the shrine.
According to authorities, the 64-year-old man was holding a banner with political messages and positioned himself near the main entrance of the shrine. His actions reportedly obstructed the movement of vehicles and visitors during the spring festival.
The banner carried messages criticizing individuals associated with the shrine and included statements related to territorial disputes between Japan and South Korea. This added to the seriousness of the situation, as such issues remain highly sensitive in the region.
The Yasukuni Shrine is dedicated to Japan’s war dead, including individuals convicted of war crimes during World War II. For countries like China and South Korea, visits and activities linked to the shrine often trigger strong reactions due to historical grievances.
The arrest took place as preparations were underway for ceremonial offerings connected to the emperor. The suspect reportedly stood in front of vehicles carrying official messengers, leading to concerns about disruption of the event.
At the same time, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi chose to send a religious offering instead of visiting the shrine in person. This decision has also drawn criticism from neighboring countries.
The incident reflects ongoing tensions in East Asia related to history, territory, and political expression. Authorities are continuing their investigation while the situation remains closely watched by regional stakeholders.
