Malaysia's Election Commission (EC) has reported 305 campaign-related offence cases during the ongoing campaign for the 16th Johor State Election as of July 2. The commission said enforcement teams are actively monitoring campaign activities to ensure candidates and political parties comply with election laws throughout the campaign period.
According to the EC, every complaint received has been reviewed, and appropriate enforcement measures have been taken under the jurisdiction of the Election Campaign Enforcement Teams (PP-KPR).
Illegal Campaign Posters Dominate Violations
The largest number of reported offences involved campaign materials displayed in prohibited locations. A total of 140 cases were linked to posters and banners placed in restricted areas designated by local authorities.
Another 90 cases involved campaign materials obstructing the visibility of motorists and road users, while 27 cases involved campaign advertisements placed within the prohibited 50-metre radius of polling centres. The remaining 48 reports covered various other election-related violations.
Enforcement Teams Intensify Monitoring
To ensure a fair and orderly election campaign, the Election Commission has deployed 56 Election Campaign Enforcement Teams across Johor. These teams have been operating since nomination day on June 27 and will continue monitoring activities until campaigning officially ends on July 10.
The EC is also working closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to oversee campaign activities and enforce election regulations.
Why has Malaysia's Election Commission recorded campaign offences?
The Election Commission recorded these cases after identifying campaign materials placed in locations that violate election regulations. Most offences involved illegal posters displayed in restricted public areas, banners blocking road users' visibility, and campaign materials installed too close to polling stations. The EC says these rules are designed to maintain public safety and ensure equal campaign conditions for all candidates.
What action is being taken against the violations?
Election Campaign Enforcement Teams are investigating every reported offence and taking action where necessary. The EC is coordinating with police, anti-corruption authorities, and communications regulators to remove illegal campaign materials, investigate complaints, and ensure compliance with the Election Offences Act throughout the campaign period.

When will Johor voters cast their ballots?
Early voting for the Johor State Election is scheduled for July 7, while polling day for the general public will take place on July 11. A total of 172 candidates are contesting 56 state assembly seats in this election.
EC Calls for Fair and Responsible Campaigning
The Election Commission has urged all political parties, candidates, and campaign workers to fully comply with election laws, campaign guidelines, and the code of ethics issued for the Johor polls. Officials said respecting these regulations is essential to maintaining public confidence in Malaysia's democratic process.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to conducting elections that are transparent, fair, efficient, and credible from the campaign period through polling day.
The Johor State Election is one of Malaysia's most closely watched state polls, with authorities placing strong emphasis on lawful campaigning and electoral integrity. The Election Commission has expanded enforcement efforts by deploying dedicated monitoring teams and strengthening cooperation with multiple government agencies to address campaign violations promptly.
As campaigning continues, election officials are encouraging responsible political participation while ensuring all candidates compete on a level playing field. The commission says strict enforcement of campaign regulations will help protect voter confidence and support a transparent electoral process ahead of polling day.
Johor Election Enters Final Campaign Week
With campaigning entering its final stage, the Election Commission says monitoring efforts will continue until the official campaign period ends at 11:59 p.m. on July 10. Authorities are expected to maintain close surveillance of campaign activities to ensure a peaceful and orderly election.
The EC has encouraged voters to stay informed through official election updates and urged all stakeholders to contribute to a smooth democratic process.
