A court in Kazakhstan has sentenced 19 activists following protests against policies in China’s Xinjiang region, a move that has sparked criticism from human rights groups.
The activists had participated in demonstrations near the border with China in November last year, where they burned Chinese flags and images of President Xi Jinping while demanding the release of detained individuals.
According to reports, 11 activists were handed five-year prison sentences for charges related to inciting discord, while eight others received restrictions on their movement.
Human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, described the action as unprecedented, suggesting it reflects increasing pressure on Kazakhstan to limit criticism of China.
The case is linked to broader concerns about China’s policies in the Xinjiang region, where authorities have faced international scrutiny over alleged detention and restrictions on ethnic minorities, including Uyghurs and Kazakhs.
Analysts note that Kazakhstan, which maintains strong economic ties with China, may be balancing domestic public sentiment with diplomatic relations, leading to stricter action against activists.
The protests were organized by members of Atajurt, a group advocating for the rights of ethnic Kazakhs affected by policies in Xinjiang, which has previously faced government pressure.
The development has raised concerns about freedom of expression in Kazakhstan, with critics warning that such actions could discourage activism and reduce awareness of human rights issues in the region.
