North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reaffirmed his country's commitment to maintaining and expanding its nuclear arsenal, describing nuclear weapons as the only reliable means to address growing global security challenges. His remarks were reported by North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) following a key ruling party meeting in Pyongyang.

Rising Global Tensions Cited

Kim argued that increasing international conflicts and geopolitical instability have made it necessary for North Korea to strengthen its nuclear deterrent. He accused major powers of fueling conflicts in different parts of the world and claimed that global confrontations are becoming more dangerous and unpredictable.

Criticism Of US And South Korea

The North Korean leader accused the United States and South Korea of escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula through enhanced military cooperation and joint nuclear deterrence strategies. According to Kim, these actions are aimed at pressuring North Korea and justify the country's continued military buildup.

Expansion Of Military Capabilities

Alongside strengthening nuclear forces, Kim reportedly ordered the accelerated development of conventional military capabilities. State media said North Korea would continue expanding advanced weapons systems and speed up construction of a new 10,000-ton strategic guided missile cruiser as part of its broader defence strategy.

Denuclearisation Talks Rejected

Analysts say Kim's latest comments reinforce Pyongyang's long-standing position that denuclearisation negotiations are no longer an option. Instead, North Korea appears focused on gaining international recognition as a nuclear-armed state and may only consider future discussions related to arms control or risk reduction measures.

The Workers' Party meeting also focused on economic development, particularly modernising North Korea's coal industry and improving mining communities. North Korea's continued commitment to expanding its nuclear programme is likely to raise concerns among regional powers and the international community. The country remains under multiple United Nations sanctions related to its nuclear and ballistic missile activities, while diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions have largely stalled in recent years.
