A 28-year-old driver involved in a viral road crash in Klang has been charged with murder following an incident that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist. The accused, R. Saktygaanapathy, appeared before the Magistrates’ Court where the charge was read out. However, no plea was recorded as the case falls under the High Court’s jurisdiction.
The charge alleges that he murdered 33-year-old Amirul Hafiz Omar along Jalan Raya Barat on March 29. Under Section 302 of the Penal Code, the offence carries the death penalty or imprisonment ranging from 30 to 40 years, along with caning if the death sentence is not imposed.
In a separate proceeding, the accused pleaded guilty to consuming prohibited substances, believed to include benzodiazepines and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The offence reportedly took place at the Klang District Police Headquarters on the same day as the crash.
This drug-related charge, framed under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, carries a penalty of a fine up to RM5,000 or a maximum two-year prison sentence. The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharudin, while the accused was not represented by legal counsel.
