KLIA Baggage Glitch Sparks Govt Action

KLIA Baggage Glitch Sparks Govt Action

Post by : Shakul

Malaysia has taken urgent action following a major baggage handling disruption at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, directing Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad to strengthen operations and improve system reliability. The issue caused widespread inconvenience for passengers and raised concerns about airport management.

The disruption occurred at Kuala Lumpur International Airport and lasted for approximately five hours. Authorities confirmed that the problem originated from a high voltage fault at a power substation, which affected the airport’s baggage handling system.

Officials stated that the failure was triggered by a technical issue involving a gas insulated switchgear unit, leading to a voltage drop that disrupted operations across the terminal. Services were eventually restored later in the evening after technical teams resolved the issue.

During the disruption, thousands of bags were processed, but a significant number were not handled correctly. Reports indicated that over one thousand bags were left behind while more than one hundred were reported missing upon arrival, causing frustration among travelers.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the matter was discussed at the Cabinet level following concerns raised by Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Authorities have instructed the airport operator to take immediate corrective measures.

As part of the response, MAHB has been directed to increase manpower in key operational areas such as arrival zones and other critical sections of the airport. The company is also required to submit weekly progress reports to ensure transparency and accountability.

The government emphasized that improving operational efficiency and preventing similar incidents in the future is a priority. Strengthening infrastructure and monitoring systems will be essential to maintaining passenger confidence and ensuring smooth airport operations.
