A knife attack at a public library in Fukuoka left three people injured on Thursday evening, according to local police officials. The incident took place around 7:50 pm at the city’s main public library located in Sawara Ward, a busy area that usually sees many visitors in the evening hours. Authorities confirmed that although the attack caused panic, none of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries.
Police arrested a 61-year-old local resident, Tatsuo Yoshii, on suspicion of attempted murder shortly after the incident. Investigators stated that the suspect allegedly attacked a 50-year-old woman, slashing her neck inside the library premises. During the same incident, two other men, aged in their 70s and 80s, were also injured while trying to escape or intervene.
According to officials, the injured woman and one of the elderly men were library users, while the third victim was a security guard who was on duty at the time of the attack. Police clarified that none of the victims appeared to have any personal connection with the suspect, suggesting the attack was random in nature.
The sudden violence caused fear among visitors, leading to an immediate evacuation of parts of the library. Emergency services arrived quickly and provided medical assistance to the injured. Police have launched a detailed investigation to determine the motive behind the attack and are reviewing security arrangements at public facilities across the city to prevent similar incidents in the future.
