Malaysia and Chile are set to strengthen economic cooperation in food security, innovation, and sustainable development following discussions held during the Chile-Asean Business Summit 2026. The initiative reflects growing interest from both countries in expanding trade opportunities and building more resilient supply chains amid global economic uncertainties.
The summit, organized by ProChile in Bangkok, brought together exporters, investors, and business leaders from across Southeast Asia. The event served as a platform to explore new partnerships and identify areas where Chilean expertise can complement the evolving needs of regional markets, particularly Malaysia.
According to ProChile representative Ana Belén Bueno, Malaysia’s expanding middle class is creating stronger demand for premium-quality products that meet international standards for sustainability, certification, and food safety. Chile has emerged as a competitive supplier of seafood, fresh fruits, timber products, and specialty goods, including halal-certified and organic products tailored to regional consumer preferences.
Trade figures highlight the growing relationship between the two countries. In 2025, Chile’s non-copper and non-lithium exports to Malaysia reached approximately US$80 million, with salmon and trout representing the largest export category. Industry leaders believe there is considerable room for further expansion as Malaysian consumers increasingly seek high-quality imported food products.
Beyond agriculture and food production, Chile is also promoting collaboration in advanced industries such as renewable energy, green hydrogen, mining technology, water management, and environmental solutions. Chilean officials believe their experience in resource efficiency and sustainable industrial development could benefit Malaysian companies pursuing modernization and environmental goals.
The summit featured 28 Chilean companies representing sectors ranging from seafood and agribusiness to forestry products, food innovation, and aquaculture services. More than 300 business-to-business meetings were organized during the event, creating opportunities for direct engagement between exporters and potential buyers from across Southeast Asia.
Looking ahead, Chile hopes to establish a long-term strategic food security corridor with Malaysia to ensure reliable year-round access to premium food supplies. Officials say Malaysia’s role as a major logistics, trade, and distribution hub in Southeast Asia makes it an ideal partner for deeper cooperation that supports economic growth, innovation, and sustainable development in both countries.
