Kuala Lumpur, October 8, 2025: The Industrial Relations Department of Malaysia has launched investigations into two companies accused of union-busting practices, as negotiations with both firms continue.
Deputy Human Resources Minister Abdul Rahman Mohamad said that under the Industrial Relations Act 1967, such action can be taken when complaints are filed. He emphasized that the Human Resources Ministry is committed to protecting workers’ rights to form and join labor unions.
Rahman made the remarks in the Dewan Rakyat while responding to a question by Tan Hong Pin (PH-Bakri) about the outcome of the department’s investigations. The names of the companies involved are currently withheld.
One of the firms, based in Penang, faced 80 police reports for allegedly intimidating employees to discourage them from participating in a secret ballot held between July 14 and 15. The ballot aimed to gauge union support among workers.
The Electronics Industry Employees Union Northern Region claimed that the company’s management interfered with workers’ right to vote freely.
Over the past decade, the ministry has received 246 complaints on union-busting activities, of which 158 cases were resolved through negotiations, 24 are still under investigation, and 64 cases have been referred to the Industrial Court.
The ministry continues to stress the importance of fair labor practices and the protection of workers’ rights in Malaysia.
