Malaysia Tourism Hits Record 10.6M Visitors

Malaysia Tourism Hits Record 10.6M Visitors

Post by : Shakul

alaysia has achieved a historic tourism milestone after recording more than 10.6 million international visitor arrivals during the first quarter of 2026. The strong performance marks the highest number of tourist arrivals ever recorded for the January to March period and highlights the country’s growing position as one of Asia’s leading travel destinations. Tourism officials described the achievement as a major boost for the national economy and an important step ahead of the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign.

According to Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, Malaysia welcomed 10,647,200 international visitors between January and March this year. The figure represents a 5.4 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025 and surpassed the previous quarterly record by nearly half a million visitors. The government noted that this is the second consecutive year Malaysia has crossed the 10 million visitor mark within the first three months of the year, showing continued recovery and expansion after the pandemic years.

Officials said the tourism surge was mainly driven by strong travel demand during the Chinese New Year holiday season, especially from China. Increased flight connectivity between Malaysia and major Chinese cities played a major role in boosting visitor numbers. Airlines such as China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines expanded their operations significantly during the festive period, increasing routes and flight frequencies between the two countries. More than 600,000 Chinese tourists visited Malaysia during the Chinese New Year travel season alone.

Malaysia also achieved another tourism milestone in February 2026 when monthly international arrivals crossed the three million mark for the first time in the country’s history. Tourism authorities reported that February recorded more than 3.47 million visitor arrivals, reflecting strong regional and international demand. China remained the fastest-growing tourism market for Malaysia, with arrivals from the country increasing by more than 25 percent compared to last year. Australia also recorded strong double-digit growth, while several ASEAN countries contributed large numbers of visitors.

The ASEAN region continued to remain Malaysia’s biggest tourism source market overall. Arrivals from neighboring Southeast Asian countries increased significantly during the quarter, although Indonesia and Vietnam recorded slight declines. Beyond Asia, Malaysia also saw strong growth from Europe, Oceania, and the Americas. European tourist arrivals crossed 500,000 for the first time during the first quarter, helped by rising demand from countries such as Turkiye, Ukraine, and Poland. Tourism officials said European travelers are important because they tend to stay longer and spend more during their visits.

Despite the positive performance, tourism authorities acknowledged that global geopolitical tensions have started affecting some travel markets. Ongoing instability in the Middle East and rising fuel costs have increased airline operating expenses, leading to higher ticket prices and some flight disruptions. Visitor arrivals from the Middle East declined sharply during the later part of March, while some South Asian and North African markets also recorded weaker growth. However, officials said Malaysia’s overall tourism momentum remained strong due to diversified international markets and expanded air connectivity.

The government stated that tourism growth has also been supported by the launch of new international flight routes. During the first quarter alone, 20 new scheduled international routes began operating into Malaysia, adding nearly 100 additional weekly flights. Charter services connecting Malaysia with China and Hong Kong also increased. Tourism officials confirmed that global airline partnerships and international promotions will continue ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026. Lufthansa is also expected to launch direct Frankfurt to Kuala Lumpur flights later this year, which is expected to further boost European arrivals.
