Malaysia Tourism Set to Rebound Strongly in H2 2026

Malaysia Tourism Set to Rebound Strongly in H2 2026

Post by : Shakul

Malaysia's tourism industry is expected to regain momentum during the second half of 2026 despite experiencing a temporary slowdown earlier this year. According to a new report by BMI, a Fitch Solutions company, international tourist arrivals are forecast to exceed pre-pandemic levels by the end of the year as travel demand gradually recovers.

The report projects Malaysia will welcome nearly 27.97 million international visitors in 2026, representing a 5.1% increase compared with last year and exceeding 2019 pre-pandemic arrivals by 7.2%.

Middle East Conflict Disrupted Travel

The slowdown recorded during the second quarter was largely linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Flight cancellations, higher airfares and disruptions at major aviation hubs such as Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi affected long-haul travel from Europe and other regions.

Although visitor numbers from the Middle East account for only a small share of Malaysia's tourism market, the disruption had a wider impact because many international travelers use Gulf airports as transit hubs before flying to Southeast Asia.

Chinese Tourists Continue Driving Growth

Despite weaker arrivals from some markets, China remained one of Malaysia's strongest tourism sources. Visitor arrivals from Mainland China increased by 21% during the first five months of 2026, reaching approximately 1.87 million travelers.

Industry experts say Malaysia's visa-free policy for Chinese tourists and improved flight connectivity under the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign continue to support strong demand.

Why Is Malaysia's Tourism Expected to Recover?

Malaysia's tourism recovery is expected because most of the recent slowdown was caused by temporary external factors rather than weaker travel demand. As flight schedules gradually normalize and airline operations improve, international arrivals are projected to increase steadily during the remainder of the year.

Tourism analysts also believe government promotional campaigns and improved international connectivity will continue attracting visitors from key Asian markets.

Recovery Expected During Peak Travel Season

BMI expects international arrivals to improve significantly between June and August before another seasonal increase in December. The research firm believes the tourism industry's long-term recovery remains on track despite short-term market challenges.

However, analysts warn that any renewed escalation of geopolitical tensions or a larger slowdown in European travel could affect future visitor growth.

Malaysia Focuses on Sustainable Tourism Growth

Malaysia is strengthening its tourism sector by expanding international air connectivity, maintaining visa-friendly policies and promoting Visit Malaysia 2026 across key global markets. The government's long-term strategy focuses on sustainable tourism growth, stronger regional partnerships and attracting high-value international travelers while supporting economic recovery through the travel industry.

Positive Outlook for Tourism Industry

Industry experts remain optimistic that Malaysia's tourism sector will continue recovering throughout 2026. Strong demand from Asia, improving airline capacity and supportive government policies are expected to help the country surpass pre-pandemic visitor numbers and strengthen its position as one of Southeast Asia's leading travel destinations.
