Hollywood is honoring one of its most enduring legends as celebrations begin for the 100th anniversary of the birth of iconic actress and model Marilyn Monroe. A series of events across Los Angeles is paying tribute to the star whose influence on cinema, fashion, and popular culture continues to resonate around the world decades after her death.
The celebrations officially began in Hollywood, Monroe’s birthplace, where admirers gathered at the historic TCL Chinese Theatre. Fans planned special commemorations, including a symbolic birthday cake and one hundred roses placed near the actress’s famous handprints. The tribute reflects Monroe’s lasting connection to Hollywood’s Golden Age and her status as one of the entertainment industry's most recognizable figures.
Adding to the centennial celebrations, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opened a major exhibition titled Marilyn Monroe: Hollywood Icon. The exhibition showcases hundreds of original items connected to Monroe’s remarkable career, offering visitors a closer look at the life of the actress who rose from a difficult childhood to become an international superstar.
Among the most anticipated attractions is Monroe’s legendary pink gown from the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. The dress, worn during her unforgettable performance of the song Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend, remains one of the most recognizable costumes in movie history and serves as a centerpiece of the exhibition.
Throughout June, special screenings of Monroe’s classic films will introduce new generations to her work. Audiences will have the opportunity to revisit acclaimed productions including The Asphalt Jungle, Niagara, The Seven Year Itch, Some Like It Hot, and The Misfits. These films helped establish Monroe as one of the most influential screen stars of the twentieth century.
The centennial celebrations will continue with a major auction featuring nearly 200 pieces of Monroe memorabilia. Collectors from around the world are expected to bid on rare items, including personal photographs, handwritten notes, beauty products, scripts, and documents from her final unfinished project, Something’s Got to Give. The auction highlights the enduring fascination with Monroe’s life and legacy.
Born in Los Angeles on June 1, 1926, Monroe transformed herself from a factory worker and model into a global cultural phenomenon. Beyond her glamorous public image, she challenged Hollywood's power structures, founded her own production company, and advocated for greater respect and opportunities for women in the entertainment industry. A century after her birth, her influence continues to inspire filmmakers, artists, and audiences across the globe.
