The Michael Jackson biopic Michael has returned to the top spot at the North American box office, continuing its strong performance in cinemas worldwide.
According to industry estimates, the film earned around $26.1 million during its fourth weekend in theaters across the United States and Canada. The movie has now crossed an impressive $703.8 million globally.
The Lionsgate production stars Jaafar Jackson, nephew of legendary singer Michael Jackson, in his first major acting role. The film follows Jackson’s rise from child star to global music icon.
Despite criticism over the film’s decision not to address allegations of sexual abuse against Michael Jackson, audiences have continued to support the movie, with many fans drawn by the singer’s famous music and performances.
Meanwhile, The Devil Wears Prada held second place at the box office with earnings of $18 million domestically. The sequel stars Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt.
Horror film Obsession debuted in third place with $16.1 million. Analysts described the low-budget movie as one of the latest horror films outperforming expectations at the box office.
Other films in the weekend top rankings included Mortal Kombat II, The Sheep Detectives and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Industry analysts say the success of “Michael” highlights the continuing global popularity of Michael Jackson’s music and legacy even years after his death.
