Rescue teams recover body of Nepal’s legendary climber from Karakoram range World-renowned Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal Purja has been confirmed dead following a deadly avalanche in Pakistan’s Karakoram mountain range. The legendary climber, known globally for conquering some of the highest peaks on Earth, lost his life during an expedition on Broad Peak. According to officials and his foundation, rescuers recovered Purja’s body after an avalanche struck the expedition team last week. The incident has shocked the global mountaineering community, with tributes pouring in from climbers and adventure enthusiasts around the world. The Nimsdai Foundation, founded by Purja in 2022, confirmed his death through a social media statement, saying his legacy would continue through the lives he inspired and the mountaineering community he helped promote.
Purja, aged 43, was among a group of 10 climbers who went missing after an avalanche hit the Broad Peak area in northern Pakistan. The mountain stands at an elevation of 8,047 meters and is considered one of the world’s most challenging peaks. Rescue teams later located the bodies of Purja and several other climbers. However, officials said difficult weather conditions and repeated avalanches were creating major challenges in bringing the bodies back to the base camp. The Alpine Club of Pakistan confirmed that the recovery operation remained extremely risky, with rescuers facing continuous threats from fresh avalanches.
Renowned Pakistani climber Sirbaz Khan, who was part of the rescue efforts, described the situation as extremely dangerous. He said rescue teams were experiencing multiple avalanches every day while attempting to reach the stranded climbers. Khan, the first Pakistani climber to summit all 14 mountains above 8,000 meters without using supplementary oxygen, expressed deep sorrow over Purja’s death. He described him as a close associate and remembered the loss as heartbreaking for the climbing community. Rescue teams are using helicopters, drones and other techniques to safely recover the remaining climbers. Authorities are carefully managing the operation to avoid further casualties.
The avalanche claimed the lives of multiple international mountaineers, including Nepalese, Omani and American climbers. Among those confirmed dead were Omani climber Nadhira Al Harthy, Nepalese climber Pur Bahadur Gurung “Yukta” and American climber Sarah Mallory Geis. Another climber, Nima Sherpa, was also named among those who lost their lives in the tragedy. The rescue operation involved local communities, Sherpa teams and experienced climbers who joined efforts despite dangerous conditions.
Nirmal Purja became one of the most recognized figures in global mountaineering after achieving a remarkable world record in 2019. He climbed all 14 mountains above 8,000 meters in just over six months, a feat that made him a global icon. Before becoming a professional mountaineer, Purja served in the British Army. His achievements helped bring international attention to Nepal’s Sherpa community and their crucial role in high-altitude climbing. Purja often spoke about his mission to highlight the skills and contributions of Sherpa climbers, saying they deserved greater recognition for their achievements.

Pakistan’s Karakoram range is known for extreme weather conditions, unpredictable avalanches and challenging terrain. The region includes several peaks above 8,000 meters, including K2, the world’s second-highest mountain. Broad Peak’s climbing season is usually considered most favorable during mid to late July, but changing weather conditions can make expeditions highly dangerous. Mountain experts say avalanches are a constant risk in the Karakoram region, even for highly experienced climbers.
The death of Nirmal Purja has left the international mountaineering world in mourning. Fellow climbers have remembered him as a fearless adventurer who pushed human limits and inspired thousands of people to pursue their dreams. His efforts to promote Nepal’s climbing community and support young mountaineers will remain an important part of his legacy.
