North Korea has once again reaffirmed its status as a nuclear-armed state, sending a strong message to the international community just days before Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to arrive in Pyongyang for a high-profile summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of Kim Jong Un and one of the country’s most powerful political figures, stated that North Korea will never abandon its nuclear weapons programme. According to state media, she dismissed recent reports suggesting that China and the United States had discussed North Korea’s denuclearization during diplomatic engagements.
In her remarks, Kim Yo Jong described the country's nuclear policy as an irreversible strategic decision. She emphasized that strengthening North Korea’s nuclear deterrent remains a core national objective and will continue regardless of external pressure or international criticism.
The statement comes at a significant diplomatic moment as Chinese President Xi Jinping prepares for his first visit to North Korea in nearly seven years. The summit is expected to focus on regional security, economic cooperation and the future of relations between the two neighboring countries, which maintain longstanding political and strategic ties.
Earlier this week, North Korea unveiled a new nuclear material production facility and announced plans to significantly expand its atomic arsenal. Analysts believe these developments are intended to reinforce Pyongyang’s bargaining position ahead of the summit while demonstrating the country’s growing military capabilities.
Adding to concerns among regional powers, Kim Jong Un recently visited a major weapons manufacturing facility and reportedly instructed officials to increase missile production capacity by two-and-a-half times over the next five years. The move highlights North Korea’s continued focus on military modernization amid ongoing tensions in Northeast Asia.
Observers say the latest statements and military announcements underline Pyongyang’s determination to secure recognition as a permanent nuclear power. As Xi Jinping’s visit begins, international attention will focus on whether the summit produces any breakthrough in regional diplomacy or further strengthens the strategic partnership between China and North Korea.
