Global oil prices witnessed a sharp decline on Monday after hopes of renewed diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran eased concerns over a prolonged Middle East conflict. Investors reacted positively after US President Donald Trump announced that discussions with Iran would begin, focusing on regional tensions, the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran’s nuclear programme. Both major crude oil contracts fell more than 5% at one point during trading as markets assessed the possibility of reduced geopolitical risks in one of the world’s most important energy regions. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments, has remained a major point of disagreement during the conflict. Any disruption in the waterway could significantly impact international energy supplies.
US President Donald Trump said negotiations with Iran were scheduled to begin after earlier warnings of possible military action against Tehran. He had previously indicated that the US could take strong measures, including potential strikes on energy-related infrastructure. However, Trump later said discussions were moving toward negotiations, suggesting that a possible agreement could help reduce tensions in the region. Iran also indicated progress toward a possible arrangement with Oman regarding a new shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz. The issue became a major source of disagreement after Tehran restricted shipping movements through alternative routes.
Apart from diplomatic developments, crude prices were also affected by a decision from major oil producers. Saudi Arabia, Russia and five other key members of the OPEC+ alliance agreed to increase oil production by 188,000 barrels per day from September. The additional supply outlook further contributed to the decline in oil prices as traders expected improved availability in global markets.
Meanwhile, currency markets remained in focus after the United States and Japan confirmed a rare joint intervention to support the Japanese yen. President Trump described the move as a sign of cooperation between the two countries, while officials said they were prepared to take further action if required. The yen strengthened significantly after facing pressure from higher US interest rates, rising energy costs and continued capital outflows. The Japanese currency reached 155.23 against the US dollar on Monday, marking its strongest level since May. Japan’s Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama confirmed that the intervention was aimed at preventing excessive volatility and unstable movements in the currency market.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also confirmed that Washington could participate in additional joint interventions, highlighting economic stability and the US-Japan partnership as key reasons behind the decision. Market analysts said the move sent a broader message that major economies may not allow extreme currency weakness to create wider financial instability. Masayuki Nakajima of Mizuho Bank said investors were focusing not only on the intervention itself but also on the signal that the yen’s weakness had become an international concern.

Asian stock markets delivered mixed results despite improved sentiment from diplomatic developments. South Korea’s KOSPI index declined after technology companies SK Hynix and Samsung dragged the market lower. The index dropped 5.1% at the start of the week after recording a historic 17.9% gain on Friday. SK Hynix and Samsung both suffered losses of more than 8%. Markets in Tokyo, Shanghai and Singapore also faced pressure, while Hong Kong, Mumbai, Sydney, Taipei, Bangkok, Manila, Wellington and Jakarta recorded gains.
The market reaction came after strong performances on Wall Street, where technology and artificial intelligence-related companies continued to attract investor attention. Amazon shares jumped more than 15% following stronger-than-expected quarterly results, while Microsoft also boosted confidence with impressive earnings. Investors are now closely watching developments in the Middle East, oil supply decisions and currency market movements to determine the next direction for global financial markets.
