Pakistan's Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik has made strong remarks regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, saying Pakistan will protect its share of water amid growing tensions with India. His comments come after India placed the 1960 treaty in abeyance following the 2025 Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir.
Pakistan Reiterates Its Position
Speaking at a press conference, Malik accused India of attempting to control Pakistan's water resources. He said millions of Pakistanis depend on agriculture and that access to water is essential for the country's food security, employment and economy. He added that Pakistan would strongly defend what it considers its legal rights under the treaty.
Why Is the Indus Waters Treaty in Dispute?
India suspended the implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty after the 2025 Pahalgam terrorist attack that killed 26 civilians. New Delhi has stated that the treaty will remain in abeyance until Pakistan takes verifiable action against cross-border terrorism. Pakistan, however, maintains that the treaty remains legally binding and cannot be suspended unilaterally.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar also defended Pakistan's position, saying the Indus Waters Treaty is an internationally recognised agreement brokered by the World Bank and cannot be revoked or amended by one country alone. Pakistani officials said they intend to present their legal arguments before international forums.
India Plans to Utilise Its Water Share
India has said it will fully utilise its share of Indus River waters over the next two years. Indian officials have maintained that water allocated to India under the treaty will be used for domestic development projects and that the government's policy remains linked to national security concerns following the Pahalgam attack.
Why Does This Matter?
The latest statements highlight increasing diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan over water security and regional stability. The Indus Waters Treaty has long been regarded as one of the world's most enduring water-sharing agreements, and any prolonged dispute could have significant implications for regional cooperation, agriculture and international diplomacy.
