The Philippines has accused Chinese fishermen of poisoning waters in the disputed South China Sea, escalating tensions in an already sensitive geopolitical region. The allegation was made by the National Security Council, which claimed that the activity has been ongoing since last year.
According to officials, the incidents occurred around Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratly Islands, a strategic area located near major global shipping routes and believed to be rich in natural resources. The location has long been a flashpoint between the Philippines and China.
Philippine authorities stated that fishermen were allegedly using cyanide in the waters, a harmful chemical that can severely damage marine ecosystems. Evidence presented included seized bottles suspected to contain toxic substances.
Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad highlighted the findings during a press conference, emphasizing the environmental risks and potential violation of international maritime norms.
The accusation adds to a series of confrontations between Philippine and Chinese vessels in the South China Sea. The disputed waters have seen repeated standoffs, reflecting broader territorial and strategic tensions in the region.
Experts warn that the use of toxic substances like cyanide could have long-term consequences for marine biodiversity, fisheries, and local livelihoods, further complicating the dispute.
The Philippine government has called for accountability and increased monitoring in the area, while the issue is expected to draw international attention amid rising concerns over environmental and security challenges in the South China Sea.
