PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang has dismissed speculation that his party's split with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) is merely an election strategy. He said the political cooperation between the two parties has officially ended, even though both are still contesting under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) banner in the Johor state election.
Speaking after a religious lecture at Rusila Mosque in Marang, Hadi stressed that the separation reflects a genuine political decision rather than a temporary campaign tactic.
Why Are PAS and Bersatu Contesting Separately?
Abdul Hadi explained that PAS and Bersatu are running separate election campaigns because Bersatu decided to continue using the Perikatan Nasional logo. While both parties remain under the same coalition symbol, they are operating independently throughout the Johor election campaign.
He added that PAS members would continue focusing on their own campaign efforts regardless of Bersatu's political strategy.
Separate Campaigns Under One Coalition Banner
The political split has become visible during the Johor state election, where PAS and Bersatu announced their candidates at separate events instead of holding a joint coalition announcement as done in previous elections.
Although candidates from both parties received official nomination documents through Perikatan Nasional, each party is now managing its own campaign teams, election machinery and local operations.
Perikatan Nasional Structure Remains Unchanged
Hadi clarified that Bersatu continues to remain a member of Perikatan Nasional because the coalition has not formally removed the party from its membership. However, the previous political cooperation between PAS and Bersatu has already ended.

PN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar has also confirmed that every component party will independently select candidates and manage election activities in the constituencies they contest.
Johor Election Campaign Intensifies
Malaysia's Election Commission has scheduled nomination day for June 27, early voting on July 7 and polling day on July 11. Political observers expect the separate campaign strategies adopted by PAS and Bersatu to become one of the major talking points throughout the Johor election.
The outcome may also influence future cooperation among opposition parties ahead of upcoming national political contests.
Political Landscape Continues to Evolve
The latest developments highlight the changing dynamics within Malaysia's opposition coalition. While both parties continue sharing the same election logo, their decision to campaign independently signals significant political differences that could shape coalition politics beyond the Johor state election.
Analysts believe voters will closely watch whether the separate campaign approach affects Perikatan Nasional's overall electoral performance.
