Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has declared victory in the country’s parliamentary election as vote counting continues across the nation. Speaking at a press conference in the early hours of Monday, Pashinyan described the outcome as a historic achievement for his Civil Contract party after preliminary results showed a commanding lead.
According to data released by Armenia’s Central Election Commission, results from just over one-fifth of polling stations indicated that the ruling Civil Contract party secured approximately 54.5 percent of the vote. The Strong Armenia alliance emerged as the main challenger with nearly 22 percent support, while other opposition groups trailed behind.
The election is widely regarded as one of the most significant political events in Armenia in recent years. It was the first nationwide parliamentary vote since the country's military defeat to Azerbaijan in 2023, an event that reshaped public debate over national security, foreign policy, and Armenia’s future geopolitical direction.
Since coming to power in 2018, Pashinyan has pursued closer relations with Western nations while attempting to reduce Armenia’s traditional dependence on Russia. His government has also focused on advancing negotiations aimed at securing a lasting peace agreement with neighboring Azerbaijan after decades of conflict in the South Caucasus region.
A strong electoral performance would provide Pashinyan with greater political authority to continue sensitive diplomatic initiatives, including peace talks with Azerbaijan and efforts to normalize relations with Turkey. Both issues remain highly important for Armenia’s long-term economic development and regional stability.
Voter turnout reached nearly 59 percent, reflecting strong public engagement in the election. Political analysts noted that the contest effectively became a referendum on Pashinyan’s leadership, with voters weighing his reform agenda against opposition calls for maintaining stronger strategic ties with Russia.
Official preliminary results are expected to be announced by election authorities later on Monday. While final vote counts are still pending, the early figures suggest that Pashinyan and his Civil Contract party are on course to secure another significant mandate, potentially shaping Armenia’s domestic and foreign policy direction for years to come.
