Fahmi Zainol, , a Penang state executive councillor and Pantai Jerejak assemblyman, pleaded not guilty on Friday to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt to his wife during proceedings at the Balik Pulau Magistrate’s Court.
The 35-year-old lawmaker, a member of People's Justice Party (PKR), was accused of assaulting his wife, Nur Hidayah Abd Jabar, at their residence in Bayan Lepas on the night of February 22. The charge was read before Magistrate Chia Huey Ting.
The case was filed under Section 323 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A, which applies when the victim is a lawful spouse. If convicted, the offence carries a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.
Prosecutors initially sought bail of RM5,000, citing the seriousness of the allegation. However, following submissions by the defence highlighting the accused’s cooperation with authorities, the court granted bail at RM2,000 with one surety.
The court has fixed April 28 for the next mention of the case and the submission of relevant documents.
