Authorities in Vietnam's Quang Tri Province have announced an ambitious plan to collect biological samples and digitise information from around 22,500 unidentified martyrs' graves. The effort is part of the national "500-Day Campaign" aimed at identifying fallen soldiers and preserving historical records.
Search Teams Continue Recovery Missions
During a review conference for the 2025-2026 dry season, officials reported that recovery teams successfully located and collected the remains of martyrs both inside Vietnam and in neighbouring Laos. Despite difficult terrain, harsh weather and limited historical information, search teams continued their operations throughout the season.
Hundreds of Remains to Be Recovered
The provincial steering committee has set a target of recovering more than 770 additional martyrs' remains during the 2026-2027 dry season. Teams will continue conducting surveys, excavations and DNA collection to improve the identification process and reunite families with their missing relatives.
DNA Collection and Digital Records
Authorities have already collected DNA samples from newly recovered remains and more than 1,400 unidentified graves. The next phase will expand this work to approximately 22,500 graves while creating a comprehensive digital database to preserve information for future identification efforts.

Technology Supports Historical Mission
Officials said digital technology and biological identification will play an important role in improving the accuracy of identifying martyrs. The project also aims to strengthen coordination between military units, government agencies and international partners involved in the search mission.
Campaign to Continue Across Vietnam
The Quang Tri government reaffirmed its commitment to completing the objectives of the national campaign by combining advanced technology with field operations. Authorities hope the initiative will honour the sacrifices of fallen soldiers while bringing long-awaited answers to thousands of families.
