The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has officially appointed football legend Rafael "Rafa" Márquez as the new head coach of the Mexico men's national football team. The announcement comes after the resignation of veteran coach Javier Aguirre following Mexico's elimination from the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The federation said the appointment is part of a long-term strategy focused on preparing the national team for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, ensuring continuity, stability, and the continued development of Mexican football.
Rafael Márquez Takes Charge of El Tri
At 47 years old, Rafael Márquez begins a new chapter in his football career after serving as assistant coach to Javier Aguirre since July 2024.
His promotion had been widely anticipated, as the FMF had already established a succession plan that positioned Márquez as Aguirre's natural replacement.
In an official statement, the federation said the appointment reflects an "orderly transition" designed to maintain the team's progress while preparing for future international competitions.
The federation added that Márquez's leadership will help strengthen player development and build a competitive squad for upcoming tournaments.
Javier Aguirre Steps Down After World Cup Exit
Javier Aguirre resigned after Mexico suffered a 3-2 defeat to England in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Although Mexico's tournament ended earlier than many fans had hoped, Aguirre leaves after guiding the team through an impressive group-stage campaign.
His contract was scheduled to expire at the end of July 2026, but he chose to step aside following the World Cup exit.
The FMF thanked Aguirre and his coaching staff for their dedication, leadership, and professionalism during their time with the national team.
The federation praised the experienced coach for leaving behind a stronger football identity and a competitive foundation for the future.

Mexico's Strong World Cup Campaign
Despite the Round of 16 disappointment, Mexico performed strongly throughout much of the tournament.
The team finished first in Group A with a perfect record of three wins from three matches, collecting nine points and maintaining a goal difference of +6.
Mexico also kept clean sheets in all three group-stage matches.
Their results included:
Mexico 2-0 South Africa
Mexico 1-0 South Korea
Mexico 3-0 Czech Republic
The team then defeated Ecuador 2-0 in the Round of 32 before narrowly losing to England in the Round of 16.
As one of the co-hosts of the tournament alongside the United States and Canada, expectations were especially high for Mexico to make a deep run in the competition.
A Legendary Career for Rafael Márquez
Rafael Márquez is regarded as one of the greatest footballers in Mexican history.
During his international career, he made 147 appearances for Mexico and scored 17 goals.
He also achieved the remarkable distinction of captaining Mexico in five consecutive FIFA World Cups:
2002
2006
2010
2014
2018
His leadership and consistency made him one of the country's most respected football figures.
Success at Barcelona
At club level, Márquez enjoyed a highly successful career with Barcelona, where he played as both a central defender and defensive midfielder.
During his time in Spain, he won:
Four La Liga titles
Two UEFA Champions League trophies
Several domestic cup competitions
His performances made him one of the most successful Mexican footballers ever to play in Europe.
Coaching Journey
Although Márquez is relatively new to senior international coaching, he has steadily built experience over recent years.
His coaching career has included:
Managing youth football teams in Spain.
Leading Barcelona B, where he recorded 40 wins, 21 draws, and 21 losses.
Serving as assistant coach of Mexico under Javier Aguirre since 2024.
The FMF believes this combination of elite playing experience and modern coaching knowledge makes him the right choice to lead the national team into the next World Cup cycle.
Focus on the 2030 FIFA World Cup
The Mexican Football Federation has made it clear that the appointment is part of a long-term project rather than a short-term solution.
Márquez's primary objective will be preparing Mexico for qualification campaigns, regional tournaments, and ultimately the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The federation hopes his experience as a World Cup captain and international football icon will inspire a new generation of Mexican players.
As Mexico begins a new era under Rafael Márquez, expectations remain high.
Supporters will hope that one of the country's greatest-ever players can successfully transition into international management and guide El Tri to greater success on the global stage.
With four years to prepare for the next World Cup, Márquez now has the opportunity to shape the future of Mexican football and build on the foundations left by Javier Aguirre.
