Police in Siak regency, Riau, have named a female teacher as a suspect in connection with the death of a student during a school science project involving a 3D-printed rifle. The incident has raised serious concerns about safety protocols in educational environments.
According to authorities, the teacher has been identified for alleged negligence after failing to prevent the demonstration of the experimental device. Sepuh Ade Irsyam Siregar stated that investigators found indications that the teacher did not take necessary precautions during the activity.
The tragic incident occurred on April 8 during a school event known as a Science Show, where students presented various projects. The demonstration took place on the school field, where multiple student groups were scheduled to showcase their experiments.
During the presentation, the student victim was demonstrating a device referred to as the “Musketeer Gun,” a 3D-printed rifle created as part of the project. Reports indicate that the student had asked others to move away before conducting the demonstration.
However, the device reportedly malfunctioned and exploded during the test, leading to fatal injuries. The incident has shocked the local community and prompted authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the demonstration.
Police have stated that the teacher could face legal consequences under provisions related to negligence causing death. Despite being named a suspect, she has not been detained, as she has been cooperative throughout the investigation process.
The case highlights the importance of strict safety measures and supervision during school activities, particularly when experiments involve potentially dangerous materials or equipment.
