Philippine Senator Dela Rosa Under Fire

Philippine Senator Dela Rosa Under Fire

Post by : Shakul

Philippine Senator Ronald dela Rosa has once again become the center of national and international attention after dramatic scenes unfolded at the Philippine Senate building in Manila. The incident happened as reports emerged of gunfire near the Senate complex while the senator publicly appealed for support against possible arrest and transfer to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Ronald dela Rosa, widely known in the Philippines by his nickname “Bato,” meaning “Rock,” previously served as the chief of the Philippine National Police under former President Rodrigo Duterte. He became one of the key figures behind the country’s controversial anti-drug campaign launched in 2016. The operation was designed to eliminate illegal drugs and criminal networks but later faced heavy criticism from international human rights organizations.

The ICC has accused dela Rosa of crimes against humanity connected to the deadly war on drugs conducted during Duterte’s administration. Prosecutors claim thousands of suspected drug users and dealers were killed during police operations and vigilante-style attacks. However, dela Rosa has repeatedly denied involvement in unlawful killings and insists that police officers only acted in self-defense during anti-drug operations.

During his time as police chief, dela Rosa openly supported Duterte’s aggressive anti-drug policies and frequently made strong public statements against drug syndicates. Under the campaign known as “Project Double Barrel,” authorities carried out large-scale operations across the country. Official government figures later confirmed that more than 6,000 people died during anti-drug operations, while rights groups claimed the actual number could be significantly higher.

The current political tensions increased further after former President Rodrigo Duterte himself was arrested in 2025 and transferred to The Hague under an ICC warrant. The international court linked Duterte to alleged murders committed during the anti-drug campaign between 2016 and 2022. Duterte has also denied all accusations and maintains that his administration acted legally to fight crime and drug trafficking.

Dela Rosa, now serving his second term as senator, recently returned to the public spotlight after months away from media attention. He appeared at an important Senate session earlier this week and participated in discussions linked to political developments involving Vice President Sara Duterte, daughter of the former president. Political observers believe his return could influence upcoming debates and investigations within the Philippine government.

The gunfire incident near the Senate building added fresh concern over security and political stability in the country. Authorities have not yet released complete details regarding the source of the gunshots or whether the incident was directly connected to dela Rosa’s legal troubles. Security around government buildings in Manila has reportedly been tightened following the incident.

International attention remains focused on the Philippines as the ICC investigation continues. Human rights groups continue demanding accountability for alleged abuses during the drug war, while supporters of Duterte and dela Rosa argue that the campaign was necessary to restore law and order in the country.

The developments surrounding Ronald dela Rosa highlight the continuing political divisions in the Philippines over the legacy of the anti-drug campaign and the growing impact of international legal pressure on former top officials.
