Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, cautioned against any fresh United States military strike on Iran, saying such action could have serious consequences for regional stability. In an interview aired on Saudi television, Lavrov said that further military escalation would risk undoing recent diplomatic progress and heighten tensions across the Middle East.
Lavrov’s remarks came shortly after indirect negotiations between US and Iranian officials in Geneva aimed at reducing mounting tensions. He stressed the importance of restraint and of seeking a diplomatic solution that respects Iran’s right to pursue a peaceful nuclear programme. Lavrov pointed out previous strikes on Iranian nuclear sites posed real risks and should not be repeated.
He also noted that Arab and Gulf countries are signaling to Washington that they do not want an escalation and understand that further conflict would be like “playing with fire.” Lavrov emphasized that boosting regional tensions could jeopardize improved relations between Iran and its neighbours, including Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, a senior US official said Iran is expected to submit a written proposal after the talks in Geneva to try to resolve its standoff with the United States. The official noted that all US military forces deployed to the region should be in place by mid-March as discussions continue.
Lavrov reiterated that Russia remains in close contact with Iranian leaders and believes Tehran is interested in resolving the nuclear issue under the framework of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. He urged a diplomatic path rather than military action to prevent a dangerous escalation.
