Selangor Sultan urges Sukma delay plan

Selangor Sultan urges Sukma delay plan

Post by : Shakul

The Sultan of Selangor has proposed postponing the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2026, citing rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and ongoing infrastructure challenges within the state. The suggestion adds a new dimension to discussions around the organisation of one of Malaysia’s largest multi-sport events.

Speaking at the opening of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly session in Shah Alam, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah highlighted concerns over the high cost of hosting the Games amid current economic uncertainties. He emphasized that it would be more appropriate to delay the event until global conditions stabilise and key infrastructure projects are completed.

A major factor behind the proposal is the redevelopment of the Shah Alam Stadium, a key venue for the Games, which is still under construction. The Sultan noted that hosting a large-scale sporting event without fully prepared facilities could impact both logistics and the overall experience.

The suggestion comes despite earlier plans by the Youth and Sports Ministry to scale down Sukma 2026 in order to manage costs while maintaining the number of sporting events. The Games are currently scheduled to take place in August 2026.

In a related move, the Sultan also decreed the cancellation of the annual Sultan of Selangor Cup football match between Selangor and Singapore. However, he supported grassroots sports development by approving a Jubilee Cup football tournament for under-15 students across districts in the state.

The proposal reflects broader concerns about balancing economic priorities, infrastructure readiness, and international uncertainties, as Malaysia prepares for major sporting events in a challenging global environment.
