A 29-year-old Singaporean man has been charged after allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding through traffic and causing a serious crash involving a school bus. Authorities said the incident ended with the vehicle catching fire after hitting a lamp post.
Allegedly Drove Against Traffic
According to court documents, the accused, Aaron Tan Yao Cong, ignored traffic directions and entered a lane meant for oncoming vehicles in the early hours of March 6, 2024. Police stated that officers initially approached the vehicle, but the driver allegedly fled the scene.
High-Speed Chase Through City Roads
Investigators said the man drove along Bukit Timah Road at an average speed of around 114 km/h while weaving through traffic. Authorities allege he ignored road safety rules and continued driving recklessly despite the risks posed to other motorists.
Collision With School Bus
The vehicle allegedly ran a red light at the junction of Sixth Avenue before crashing into a private school bus that was making a U-turn. Moments later, the car struck a lamp post and burst into flames, creating a dangerous situation for everyone involved.
Children Among Those Injured
Police said two children aged nine and ten who were travelling on the bus required medical treatment. The driver, three passengers, the bus driver and the injured children were all taken to hospital following the collision.
Alcohol Level Above Legal Limit
Court records indicate that Tan refused to provide a breath sample when requested by police. Subsequent tests reportedly showed he had 148 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, nearly twice Singapore’s legal limit for drivers.
Court Hearing Scheduled Next Month
The accused now faces several charges, including drink driving, dangerous driving causing hurt, driving against traffic and failing to cooperate with a breathalyser test. He is expected to appear in court again on July 16, where the case will proceed through the legal system.
