A former teacher has been sentenced to five months in jail in Singapore after admitting to exploiting a 15-year-old student through inappropriate late-night video calls that began as academic consultations.
The 39-year-old man, whose identity has not been disclosed due to a court-imposed gag order protecting the victim, pleaded guilty to committing an obscene act involving a minor.
The court heard that the accused had taught the victim biology in 2012 and later reconnected with her in 2013 through a Facebook group created for exam preparation. He subsequently shared his personal contact details and encouraged students to communicate with him directly.
Their conversations gradually turned personal, leading to a meeting at a park near the student’s home just before her examinations. Following this, the communication escalated into repeated late-night video calls and in-person meetings over several weeks.
Prosecutors said the interactions caused long-term emotional harm to the victim, affecting her self-esteem and mental well-being for years. The contact eventually ceased after the student moved on to junior college in 2014.
The case came to light in April 2023 when the victim reported the incident after reading about another similar investigation. The man was suspended the same month and later arrested in August 2025. He is no longer part of the teaching profession.
Authorities emphasised the seriousness of such offences and the importance of safeguarding minors, especially in educational environments where trust plays a critical role.
