A court in Singapore has convicted a 41-year-old former teacher for grooming a minor student and committing indecent acts, in a case that has raised serious concerns about the misuse of authority in educational institutions. The court found that the accused had deliberately built a false emotional relationship with the student to hide his inappropriate intentions.
The victim, who was a Secondary 2 student at the time of the incidents in 2022, was between 13 and 14 years old. According to court findings, the teacher frequently met the student under the pretext of helping her academically, but gradually crossed professional boundaries.
During these interactions, the teacher reportedly engaged in inappropriate physical contact, such as touching the student’s hand and patting her head. These actions were presented in court as part of a pattern of grooming behavior that developed over time.
Text messages submitted as evidence revealed that the accused used affectionate and misleading language, calling the student “dear,” “precious,” and “daughter.” He also expressed love for her and complimented her appearance, which the prosecution argued was part of a calculated effort to build emotional dependency.
Despite warnings from school authorities in November 2022 regarding the inappropriate nature of his interactions, the teacher continued to meet the student. He even suggested shifting their conversations to disappearing message modes on social media platforms to avoid detection.
The court, led by Deputy Principal District Judge Ong Chin Rhu, found the victim’s testimony to be consistent and credible. The judge also noted that the accused’s explanations lacked reliability and contained contradictions, rejecting his claim that certain messages were harmless or symbolic.
The teacher has been convicted of multiple charges, including three counts of committing indecent acts with a minor and one count of sexual grooming. He now faces the possibility of several years in prison, with each indecent act charge carrying a maximum sentence of up to five years.
The Ministry of Education Singapore confirmed that the individual had been suspended in October 2023 and is no longer employed as a teacher. Authorities emphasized that strict action will be taken against any staff who violate professional standards.
This case highlights the importance of safeguarding students and maintaining strict boundaries in educational environments. It also reflects the legal system’s firm stance against crimes involving minors and abuse of trust.
