South Africa appoint Fortuin as captain for Namibia limited-overs tour

South Africa appoint Fortuin as captain for Namibia limited-overs tour

Post by : Rohit Dhiman

JOHANNESBURG, August 11: South Africa have named spinner Bjorn Fortuin as captain for their upcoming limited-overs assignments in Namibia, with the experienced campaigner set to lead the Twenty20 side in a tri-series involving Namibia and Zimbabwe. The South African squad will first compete in the T20 tri-series in Windhoek from August 28 to September 6. The team will then face Namibia in a three-match One-Day International series. The same group of players has been selected for both formats, with the selectors opting for a combination of established names and promising young talent. The move is aimed at giving emerging players valuable exposure at international level while allowing several senior players to manage their workload.

Young players receive international opportunities

South Africa have handed first call-ups to all-rounders Duan Jansen and Eathan Bosch. Jansen is the twin brother of Test bowler Marco Jansen, while Bosch is the younger brother of Corbin Bosch, who has represented South Africa across all three formats. The ODI squad also includes first-time selections for batters Connor Esterhuizen and Jordan Hermann, along with seamer Nqobani Mokoena. Head coach Shukri Conrad said the selection was influenced by South Africa's demanding international calendar. The Proteas are scheduled to host or tour against Australia, Bangladesh and England later in the year, making it important to manage the workload of experienced players. Conrad explained that the series would provide younger members of the squad with an opportunity to gain international experience. He also said selecting one squad for both assignments would ensure that all areas of the team remain adequately covered while allowing players to strengthen their international credentials.

Who is in South Africa's squad?

Fortuin will captain a 15-member squad featuring players from several domestic franchises. The group includes Eathan Bosch and Dewald Brevis from the Titans, Tony de Zorzi of Western Province, Connor Esterhuizen and Kwena Maphaka of the Lions, and Jordan Hermann of the Warriors. Rubin Hermann represents North West Dragons, while Duan Jansen is also part of the Titans contingent. Nqobani Mokoena comes from the Dolphins and Nqaba Peter from the Lions. The squad is completed by Lhuan-dré Pretorius, Lutho Sipamla, Jason Smith and Prenelan Subrayen.
