South Korea President Calls for Election System Reform

South Korea President Calls for Election System Reform

Post by : Shakul

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has called for a major overhaul of the country's election management system following controversies during the June 3 local elections. The president described several issues, including ballot paper shortages, as unacceptable and said urgent reforms were needed to restore public confidence.

Lee stated that a complete review of the existing system should be carried out to ensure greater transparency and accountability in future elections.

Probe Ordered Into Election Irregularities

The president has ordered a full investigation into the ballot shortages and other problems reported during the local elections. Prosecutors and police authorities will participate in the inquiry to determine how the issues occurred and whether any rules were violated.

The investigation comes after widespread criticism from voters and political groups who questioned the management of the election process.

Public Anger Followed Voting Problems

The ballot shortages sparked public outrage across the country and led to protests by citizens concerned about election fairness. The controversy also resulted in the resignation of the head of South Korea's National Election Commission (NEC).

Many voters expressed concerns about whether the problems could have affected confidence in the democratic process.

Lee Criticises Election Commission

President Lee said the National Election Commission had operated with too much freedom and insufficient oversight. He argued that institutions responsible for protecting democracy must also be held accountable for their actions.

According to Lee, neutrality and independence should be matched by responsibility and transparency in the administration of elections.

Constitutional Changes May Be Considered

The South Korean leader suggested that political parties could consider limited constitutional amendments related to the election commission if there is enough agreement between ruling and opposition lawmakers.

He said reforms should focus on preventing similar incidents from occurring in future national and local elections.

Peaceful Protests Must Be Protected

While addressing public demonstrations following the election controversy, Lee stressed that peaceful protests are a fundamental democratic right and should be protected.

At the same time, he warned that authorities would respond firmly to any acts of violence or unlawful behaviour during public gatherings.

Focus on Restoring Trust

The government now faces the challenge of restoring public trust in South Korea's electoral system. The findings of the upcoming investigation are expected to play a key role in shaping future reforms and determining whether changes to election laws or institutions are required.

Officials say ensuring fair, transparent and reliable elections will remain a top priority for the administration.
