South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has called for a thorough investigation into suspected illegal connections between a religious group and politicians, the presidential office confirmed on Wednesday. The investigation, Lee emphasized, should apply across the board, covering politicians from both ruling and opposition parties, regardless of their rank or position.
While the presidential statement did not identify the religious group in question, Lee expressed serious concern about religious organizations interfering in politics and misusing funds. During a livestreamed cabinet meeting on Tuesday, the President directed his ministers to explore ways to disband religious groups that engage in political meddling or conduct suspicious financial activities.
President Lee also sought clarification on how South Korea’s legal process for disbanding a religious organization differs from Japan’s system. His comments underscored a growing focus on transparency and accountability in the country’s political landscape, as well as the need to prevent undue influence by non-governmental entities.
Officials in the presidential office stressed that the investigation would be impartial and comprehensive, ensuring that all allegations of illegal political involvement or misuse of funds are properly addressed. Lee’s initiative reflects his commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining public trust in South Korea’s democratic institutions.
The announcement comes amid heightened public scrutiny over the involvement of religious groups in politics, a topic that has drawn widespread attention in recent years. Analysts say that Lee’s order for an investigation could set a precedent for stricter regulations and more transparent oversight of organizations suspected of exerting undue influence on political processes.
As the inquiry moves forward, South Korea’s government is expected to take decisive measures to ensure that all political and financial irregularities involving religious organizations are thoroughly examined. The President’s call for accountability signals a broader push for ethical governance and stronger enforcement of laws aimed at protecting the integrity of the nation’s political system.
