Tamil parties seek India push on accord

Tamil parties seek India push on accord

Post by : Shakul

Leaders of Sri Lanka’s Tamil political parties have called for sustained engagement from India to ensure the full implementation of the Indo-Lanka Accord, a landmark pact aimed at addressing Tamil political aspirations during the island nation’s civil conflict.

During a recent meeting in Colombo, Tamil representatives raised concerns about delays in devolving powers to provincial councils and stressed the need for meaningful political autonomy. The discussions took place with C. P. Radhakrishnan, who reaffirmed India’s consistent position supporting devolution under Sri Lanka’s constitutional framework.

The Indo-Lanka Accord, signed in 1987, led to the introduction of the 13th Amendment to Sri Lanka’s Constitution, which provided for provincial councils and limited power-sharing. However, Tamil parties argue that the provisions have not been fully implemented, particularly in areas such as land and police powers.

The leaders also discussed the importance of conducting long-delayed provincial elections, viewing them as a crucial step toward restoring democratic representation at the regional level. India has historically played a key role in encouraging political reconciliation in Sri Lanka, especially following the end of the civil war in 2009.

Tamil parties emphasized that consistent diplomatic engagement from India is essential to ensure that commitments made under the Accord are honored. They believe stronger implementation would contribute to long-term peace, equality, and stability in Sri Lanka.

The meeting reflects ongoing regional efforts to address unresolved ethnic and political issues, with both sides acknowledging the importance of dialogue and cooperation in achieving lasting solutions.
