A specialized surgical team at Sur Referral Hospital has successfully carried out a highly complex operation to remove an advanced stage colon tumor, marking a significant achievement for healthcare services in Oman’s governorates. The surgery was performed in cooperation with specialists from the Royal Hospital and highlights the growing capabilities of regional medical institutions across the Sultanate.
According to Dr. Badr bin Rashid Al-Jaafari, Head of the Surgery Department at Sur Referral Hospital, the patient was diagnosed with a grade four colon tumor measuring approximately 12 centimeters. The tumor had spread and become attached to the abdominal wall, the right uterine tube and the ovary, making the procedure particularly challenging and requiring advanced surgical expertise.
The operation lasted approximately three hours and was completed successfully. Surgeons were able to remove the tumor entirely along with all affected tissues while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety and surgical precision. Medical officials described the procedure as one of the most complex operations ever conducted at the hospital.
Dr. Al-Jaafari explained that surgeries of this level were previously performed primarily at the Royal Hospital in Muscat. The successful completion of the operation in Sur demonstrates the remarkable progress achieved in decentralizing specialized healthcare services and expanding advanced medical treatment options across Oman’s governorates.
The achievement also reflects the strong cooperation between healthcare institutions in the country. The partnership between Sur Referral Hospital and the Royal Hospital focuses on exchanging expertise, strengthening national medical competencies and ensuring that citizens receive high-quality healthcare services closer to their homes.
Hospital officials revealed that future plans are already underway to further expand specialized surgical services. New support departments, including vascular surgery and urology surgery units, are expected to be introduced as part of efforts to meet evolving healthcare demands and improve the hospital’s ability to manage increasingly complex medical cases.
Medical experts noted that such achievements help build public confidence in local healthcare facilities while reducing the need for patients to travel to Muscat for specialized treatment. The successful operation represents another milestone in Oman’s ongoing efforts to localize advanced healthcare services, improve treatment accessibility and enhance the overall quality of medical care throughout the country.
