A Taiwan Coast Guard officer is combining professional duty with spiritual faith as tensions continue to rise across the Taiwan Strait. First mate Yeh Chih-sheng serves aboard Coast Guard vessel CG1005 while carrying blessed temple charms that he believes provide protection during dangerous patrols near Chinese vessels.
Based in Taiwan's Penghu Islands, Yeh is also an assistant priest at a local temple dedicated to the Five Lords, guardian deities traditionally worshipped by fishing communities for safe voyages and protection at sea. He says both his public service and religious role are focused on protecting people.
The Taiwan Coast Guard has become increasingly active as Chinese Coast Guard and naval vessels regularly operate near Taiwan's surrounding waters. Taiwanese authorities continue monitoring these activities while maintaining a policy of avoiding unnecessary confrontation.
Coast Guard Patrols Increase Across Taiwan Strait
Yeh explained that Chinese ships now frequently cross the unofficial median line that once separated the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan's Coast Guard responds through radio warnings, loudspeakers, LED message boards and water cannons instead of aggressive military action.
He said officers follow the principle of "not provoking and not yielding," ensuring maritime security while preventing unnecessary escalation during encounters with Chinese vessels.
Why Does Faith Matter for Taiwan's Coast Guard?
For Yeh, faith provides emotional strength during demanding patrol missions. Before heading out to sea, he carries temple talismans and ceremonial items blessed by the Five Lords, believing they offer spiritual protection to him and fellow sailors.
The centuries-old traditions remain important for many fishing families in Penghu, where religion and maritime life have long been closely connected.
China's Maritime Pressure Remains a Concern
China continues to claim sovereignty over Taiwan and considers surrounding waters under its jurisdiction. Taiwan rejects these claims and maintains that its Coast Guard is responsible for protecting the island's territorial waters and maritime rights.

The increasing presence of Chinese vessels has also attracted international attention, with several countries expressing concern over regional stability and freedom of navigation in one of the world's busiest shipping routes.
How Is Taiwan Responding?
Taiwan continues strengthening maritime surveillance while avoiding actions that could increase regional tensions. Coast Guard crews remain on regular patrols to monitor Chinese ship movements, safeguard fishermen and ensure the safety of commercial shipping routes passing through the Taiwan Strait.
Officials say maintaining peace, protecting civilians and preserving maritime security remain their primary responsibilities despite growing geopolitical pressure.
What Does This Mean for Regional Stability?
The Taiwan Strait remains one of the world's most strategically important waterways, carrying billions of dollars in global trade each year. Continued maritime tensions between Taiwan and China are closely watched by governments and international markets because any escalation could affect regional security, global shipping routes and economic stability across the Indo-Pacific. Taiwan's approach of combining restraint with continuous maritime patrols reflects its effort to maintain security while avoiding unnecessary conflict.
