Taiwan President Lai Ching-te has urged newly graduated military officers to stay alert against Chinese espionage and protect Taiwan's democracy and sovereignty. Speaking at a graduation ceremony at Fu Hsing Kang College on Tuesday, Lai said military personnel must clearly recognise security threats and remain loyal to the nation.
Why Did Lai Warn Military Cadets?
President Lai said Taiwan has witnessed a rise in Chinese espionage and infiltration attempts, particularly targeting the armed forces. He stressed that soldiers must resist pressure, temptation and intelligence operations that could compromise national security or weaken the country's defence.
Warning Over Rising Espionage Threats
Lai said Taiwan's armed forces continue to face infiltration, espionage and influence operations linked to China. He urged graduates to remain vigilant and said protecting Taiwan's sovereignty begins with loyalty, discipline and a clear understanding of the country's security challenges.
China-Taiwan Tensions Remain High
China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has never ruled out using force to bring the island under its control. Taiwan, however, continues to govern itself democratically. Authorities have reported an increase in Chinese spying cases in recent years, especially involving military personnel and defence institutions.

What Is Taiwan's Position on China?
President Lai reiterated that the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People's Republic of China are separate governments and are not subordinate to one another. He called on military graduates to uphold democratic values, oppose communism and defend Taiwan's freedom.
Historic Military College Holds Symbolic Role
Fu Hsing Kang College was established in 1951 after the Republic of China government relocated to Taiwan following the Chinese Civil War. The institution was originally founded to train officers in political warfare and anti-communist ideology and continues to educate military personnel and international students.
Why Is This Speech Significant?
Lai's remarks come at a time of growing cross-strait tensions and increasing concerns over Chinese intelligence activities. His speech reflects Taiwan's focus on strengthening military readiness, protecting democratic institutions and preventing foreign infiltration into its armed forces.
International Guests Attend Ceremony
The graduation ceremony was attended by ambassadors from Belize, Guatemala and Paraguay, which maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Jordan's de facto representative also attended, highlighting Taiwan's continued engagement with international partners despite limited diplomatic recognition.
