Taiwan has renewed its call for stronger defense cooperation with the United States as concerns over growing military pressure from China continue to rise. Alexander Yui Tah-ray, Taiwan’s top representative in Washington, said the island urgently needs access to American weapons to strengthen its self-defense capabilities and deter potential aggression from Beijing.
Speaking during an interview in Washington, Yui emphasized that Taiwan is increasing its defense spending and remains committed to protecting its territory and democratic system. He said Taiwan cannot rely solely on outside assistance and must build its own military strength to face future security challenges.
A proposed US$14 billion arms package for Taiwan remains under review by the United States administration. The delay has generated concern in Taiwan and among lawmakers in Washington, particularly after former discussions between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping raised questions about the future of the deal.
Yui stressed that Taiwan is not seeking conflict and described China as the primary source of military pressure in the region. He pointed to the regular deployment of Chinese warships and military aircraft around Taiwan as evidence of an increasingly challenging security environment.
Despite concerns over the delayed weapons package, Yui said he has not seen any major change in long-standing US policy toward Taiwan. He expressed confidence that relations between Taipei and Washington remain strong and that defense cooperation will continue to play a key role in regional stability.
US officials have also maintained that American policy toward Taiwan remains unchanged. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently stated that Washington does not negotiate arms sales with Beijing and that any decision regarding military support for Taiwan will be based on US strategic and security considerations.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has also called for the arms package to be approved as soon as possible, saying the island is determined to strengthen its defenses. Meanwhile, China continues to oppose all US weapons sales to Taiwan, insisting that the issue remains an internal Chinese matter and warning against foreign involvement.
