Thailand has announced stricter aviation security measures to prevent drug trafficking through international flights after a recent case involving Thai airline employees detained overseas. Deputy Minister of Transport Phatthapong Pataraprasit said the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has held an emergency meeting with all relevant agencies to strengthen airport security and close existing loopholes.
Crew Members to Face Passenger-Level Screening
The meeting concluded that airline crew members will continue to undergo security screening using the same standards applied to passengers. Thai Airways has also been instructed to tighten baggage inspections before duty and enforce strict disciplinary action against any staff found violating security regulations or carrying unauthorized items.
Why Is Thailand Strengthening Airport Security?
The new measures follow concerns over alleged drug trafficking involving Thai airline personnel abroad. Authorities said closer cooperation between aviation, customs, narcotics and security agencies will help prevent criminal networks from exploiting the country's aviation system.
What new airport security measures has Thailand introduced?
Thailand has introduced stricter screening of airline crew members, enhanced baggage inspections, greater intelligence sharing among government agencies, and stronger monitoring by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand. The measures aim to prevent drug trafficking through international flights while maintaining global aviation safety standards.
Technology and Intelligence Sharing Expanded
Officials also agreed to improve risk analysis through the use of Passenger Name Records (PNRs) and strengthen data sharing between Customs, Immigration and other government agencies. Airports of Thailand (AOT) plans to introduce biometric verification during baggage check-in to improve passenger identification and security tracking.

Thailand Enhances Aviation Safety Standards
Thailand is expanding cooperation between CAAT, Thai Airways, Airports of Thailand, Customs, the Office of the Narcotics Control Board and other security agencies. The government says the upgraded security system combines modern technology, biometric verification and intelligence sharing to strengthen airport safety and protect international aviation operations.
Authorities Aim to Close Security Loopholes
The Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that crew members are already searched under strict regulations and that security agencies have successfully intercepted several drug trafficking attempts in previous cases. Officials said continuous monitoring and coordinated enforcement will further reduce security risks.
Government Seeks Global Confidence
Deputy Minister Phatthapong said all agencies have been instructed to modernize aviation security, eliminate weaknesses and strengthen international confidence in Thailand's aviation system. He added that advanced technology and coordinated intelligence will help ensure airports continue meeting global safety and security standards.
