The government is planning to allocate a budget in fiscal year 2027 to establish drug rehabilitation centers at the district level in Thailand’s southern border provinces. This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen the country’s response to the growing drug crisis, particularly in sensitive border areas where the issue continues to affect communities.
The announcement was made by Ms. Ratchada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, following high-level meetings held with relevant agencies in Yala and Pattani provinces. These discussions focused on reviewing the current drug situation and exploring more effective ways to combine enforcement actions with long-term rehabilitation strategies.
Although authorities have reported significant progress in suppressing drug trafficking, including an increase in arrests of drug dealers, the overall drug problem remains a serious concern. Officials have observed a sharp rise in methamphetamine use, especially among young people, with cases among young women reportedly doubling. This trend is particularly alarming as it also increases the risk of users becoming involved in small-scale drug distribution.
Local residents have voiced strong concerns about the accessibility of rehabilitation services. Many communities have highlighted the urgent need for treatment centers located closer to where people live, as distance and lack of continuous care often lead to treatment dropouts, escape cases, and relapse. Community-based facilities are seen as a key solution to ensure consistent monitoring and support for patients.
The Prime Minister has confirmed that the establishment of high-quality district-level rehabilitation centers will move forward in line with government policy. He emphasized that each center must be designed to suit the specific needs and social context of the local population, ensuring that solutions are both practical and culturally appropriate.
Authorities have also stressed that solving the drug problem requires a comprehensive and coordinated approach. This includes active cooperation between families, religious institutions, educational organizations, local administrative bodies, and security agencies to create a strong support system for prevention, treatment, and reintegration.
The government has reiterated that drug abuse remains a major threat to public safety and national development. By combining strict law enforcement with effective rehabilitation measures, officials aim to reduce drug dependency, prevent repeat offenses, and ultimately improve the quality of life for people across the affected regions.
