A major policy decision has been announced in Bangkok as the government moves to reduce electricity costs and promote renewable energy. The National Energy Policy Council (NEPC), led by Anutin Charnvirakul, has approved changes to electricity tariffs and introduced new measures to support rooftop solar power.
Under the revised policy, the first 200 units of electricity consumption for residential users will be priced at no more than 3 baht per unit. This change is expected to take effect by June 2026 and aims to reduce the financial burden on households while encouraging efficient energy use.
For electricity usage beyond 200 units, rates will be adjusted to promote more responsible consumption. Authorities believe this progressive pricing system will help reduce overall energy demand and improve efficiency across the country.
In addition, the government plans to use savings from natural gas allocation to provide discounts on electricity bills. This benefit will apply to households consuming up to 200 units per month during the May to August 2026 period, offering further financial relief.
The NEPC has also focused on promoting rooftop solar power among the public. A new net billing system has been approved, allowing households to sell surplus electricity back to the grid at a fixed rate of 2.20 baht per unit for up to 10 years.
Authorities have set a target of purchasing up to 500 megawatts of surplus solar power, with a maximum installation capacity of 5 kilowatts per household meter. This initiative aims to expand renewable energy use and reduce dependence on traditional power sources.
Officials have emphasized the importance of efficient energy use and the need for all agencies to implement the policy effectively. With over 20 million households expected to benefit, the move is seen as a significant step toward sustainable energy and lower living costs.
