Thailand Uses Satellites to Control Wildfires

Thailand Uses Satellites to Control Wildfires

Post by : Shakul

In a significant step toward modern disaster management, the Thai government has successfully used advanced satellite technology to detect and control a wildfire in a remote forest area of Chiang Mai. The operation highlights how real-time monitoring systems are transforming the way authorities respond to environmental crises, especially in regions that are difficult to access.

According to officials, the government under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has intensified its wildfire response strategy by integrating cutting-edge tools such as satellite-based hotspot detection systems. This approach allows authorities to identify fire outbreaks at a very early stage and coordinate rapid action on the ground, significantly reducing the chances of large-scale destruction.

The incident occurred in Sri Lanna National Park, located in Mae Taeng district, where officials detected multiple fire hotspots through the VIIRS system onboard the Suomi NPP satellite. The alert was received in the early hours, prompting immediate action from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation.

Despite the early detection, the situation posed serious challenges due to the fire’s location deep within dense forest terrain. Officials had to carefully plan their route and trek through difficult landscapes for several hours before reaching the affected area. The firefighting operation began in the afternoon and was successfully completed within a few hours, preventing the fire from spreading further into surrounding forest regions.

Authorities reported that approximately 70 rai of forest land, consisting mainly of dry dipterocarp and mixed deciduous forest, was affected by the fire. A coordinated effort involving 24 officers from multiple units, including park rangers and patrol teams, played a crucial role in bringing the situation under control despite the difficult conditions on the ground.

Government spokesperson Ms. Lalida emphasized that satellite technology enables officials to “see first, arrive quickly, and control rapidly,” which is especially critical in remote areas where traditional monitoring methods may fall short. This technological advantage not only improves response time but also minimizes environmental damage and enhances the efficiency of firefighting operations.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the wildfire was likely caused by human activity, specifically individuals entering the forest to collect resources. In response, the government has directed all relevant agencies to strengthen surveillance, strictly enforce regulations, and raise awareness among local communities about the dangers of such actions.

The use of advanced monitoring systems is also part of a broader effort to combat air pollution, particularly the ongoing PM2.5 crisis that affects public health across the region. By preventing large-scale wildfires, authorities aim to reduce harmful emissions and protect both the environment and the well-being of citizens.

The government has urged the public to cooperate by avoiding any form of open burning and actively participating in efforts to monitor and report potential fire risks. Officials believe that combining modern technology with public awareness and strict enforcement will be key to achieving long-term solutions for wildfire prevention and environmental protection.
